During Men’s Health Month in June, the White House and the federal government encourage early detection of diseases affecting men. The campaign also raises awareness of preventable health problems and the benefits of seeking medical advice and timely treatment for injuries and illnesses.
At The Villa at San Mateo, we believe that physical wellness comprises a number of vital components, such as adequate sleep, healthy diet and daily movement. This Men’s Health Month, what are some steps older men can take to improve their health, so they can continue living active, independent lives?
Find a Doctor You Trust
Finding a long-term doctor is a critical step in protecting your health. Men sometimes hesitate to seek medical treatment, but by establishing a relationship with a trusted medical professional, you have someone to call when health concerns arise.
Focus on Nutrition
Everyone knows the importance of healthy eating, but they may not know how to create a nutrient-rich diet. Begin by cutting empty calories, including sugar, white flour and processed convenience foods, from your diet and replacing them with colorful fruits and vegetables. Fill out your diet with whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats and plenty of water.
Prioritize Close Relationships
Make an effort to stay connected to friends and family members, and avoid spending too much time alone. If you have a significant other in your life, don’t hesitate to speak to your doctor if you need assistance with physical intimacy.
Don’t Ignore Mental Health
Some older men fall prey to lingering societal stigmas and do not seek mental health assistance when they need it. If you have a family history of mental illness or experience mental health challenges such as depression, see your doctor.
Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a significant risk for older men, but healthy lifestyle choices can help you reduce the chances of developing the condition. Avoid trans fats and saturated fat, which may contribute to the growth of prostate cancer, and consume plenty of healthy foods like vegetables and green tea.
Vary Your Exercise Routine
If you don’t participate in any form of exercise, consider getting your doctor’s approval before beginning a regular program of movement. If you do work out but your routine feels too easy, it may be time to vary your exercises. Be sure to include weight training along with your cardio workouts.
Shave Carefully
You’ve probably shaved for many years, but aging skin, which may become drier, thinner and less firm, can require some alterations to technique. Be sure to wash your skin with hot water beforehand, use an appropriate shaving cream, and make sure your blade is sharp. After shaving, rinse with cold water, and use an antiseptic aftershave to kill bacteria and ward off infection.
Get Adequate Sleep
Many men believe they can outrun sleep deprivation with caffeine or exercise. The truth is, most older men need at least seven hours per night to stay healthy. To get your shuteye, practice good sleep hygiene by making sure your room is cool and dark, and leave your smartphone in another room.
By following these eight tips, you can protect your health — and remain active and independent — throughout the year.
